Our Acclimatization Process

At Fetch Dubai, we prioritize our members’ peace of mind by being exceptionally cautious, putting our money where our mouth is. We understand that the pet care industry often encourages unwitting pet parents and guardians to take unnecessary risks, ultimately at the expense of their dogs.

In a field dominated by easy and convenient ‘registrations’ and ‘evaluations,’ we stand apart by prioritizing the well-being of our current members' dogs over unfamiliar potential clients. We rely on thorough pre-screening rather than taking the word of someone we’ve never met as a safety guarantee. It's not uncommon for pet parents aware of their own dog’s concerning behavior to take chances when evaluations are brief or offered at little to no cost.

As a Private Members Club, those who wish to join Fetch Dubai must successfully complete several steps before, during, and beyond our acclimatization process. Through this process, members can be confident that all dogs in our care have undergone an extensive evaluation, ensuring they are exceptionally well-behaved. This commitment demonstrates our dedication to creating a secure, well-managed space where well-being is prioritized above financial gain.

During the initial acclimatization process, members will experience how our approach to pet care sets us apart from our industry. Dogs will learn pliable skills and manners, although these skills and manner hold benefits for us to facilitate better management of the dogs in our care, the primary focus remains on enriching the relationship between Members and their dogs.

Sit & Stay

Sit and stay practices are foundational commands that are essential for a well-mannered dog. These practices not only enhance a dog’s behaviour but also strengthen the bond between the dog and their human companions.

Sit is one of the most basic commands, teaching the dog to place their rear on the ground and remain in that position until released. This command is useful in a variety of situations, from greeting guests to waiting patiently for a treat. It helps to calm the dog and can prevent unwanted behaviours like jumping on people.

Stay builds on the sit command by teaching the dog to remain in place for a designated period, regardless of distractions. It’s a crucial skill for ensuring the dog’s safety, especially in potentially dangerous situations like crossing a street or encountering other animals. Stay also helps to instill patience and impulse control in dogs, which are valuable traits for any well-behaved pet.

At Fetch Dubai, sit and stay practices are integrated into our daily routines and enrichment activities. We emphasize fear- and force-free reinforcement techniques to ensure that these commands are not only learned but also enjoyed by the dogs. Our approach ensures that dogs view sit and stay as positive, rewarding experiences, making them more likely to obey these commands in various settings.

Incorporating these practices into regular prctice sessions helps dogs develop better self-control, enhances their focus, and contributes to a more harmonious relationship with their human companions. Whether during daycare, boarding, or at home, sit and stay are essential components of a well-rounded dog’s skill set.

Come-to-touch

Come-to-touch is an interactive and engaging command that helps dogs learn to focus, respond reliably to cues, and build trust with their human companions. This practice involves teaching the dog to come forward and touch their nose to a designated target, such as a hand or a specific object. It’s an effective tool for enhancing a dog’s recall ability, especially in distracting environments, and it’s a key component of positive reinforcement practices.

The come-to-touch command is particularly useful in a variety of situations, from guiding your dog into a desired position to redirecting their attention away from potential distractions. This command encourages dogs to actively engage with their environment and respond promptly to cues, making it easier to manage their behaviour in different settings.

At Fetch Dubai, we weave the come-to-touch command into our daily routines and enrichment sessions, making it an integral part of our approach to dog care. This command not only helps dogs hone their focus and recall but also encourages them to engage with their surroundings in a positive, controlled manner. By using fear- and force-free reinforcement techniques, we ensure that dogs see the come-to-touch command as an enjoyable challenge, promoting active participation and strengthening their connection with their human companions.

By incorporating come-to-touch into regular practice sessions, dogs not only sharpen their responsiveness but also build a deeper understanding of communication cues. This command fosters a sense of accomplishment and boosts confidence, helping dogs to better navigate various situations with ease. Whether during daycare, boarding, or at home, mastering come-to-touch enriches the relationship between dogs and their families, ensuring they are well-prepared for real-world interactions and challenges.

Collar/harness Grab

Collar/harness grab is an important safety practice that involves practicing with dogs to remain calm and cooperative when their collar or harness is gently held. While this practice isn't entirely force-free, it aligns well with cooperative and fear-free principles, focusing on making the experience as stress-free and positive as possible for the dog.

The collar/harness grab is a crucial skill for handling dogs in various situations, such as securing them during walks, preventing them from bolting, or managing them in potentially stressful environments. By teaching dogs to remain relaxed when their collar or harness is grabbed, we help reduce anxiety and ensure they respond calmly in situations where quick control is necessary.

At Fetch Dubai, we integrate collar/harness grab practices into our routines with an emphasis on cooperative and fear-free techniques. We carefully condition dogs to associate the action with positive experiences, using gentle guidance and rewards to make the process comfortable and reassuring. This approach helps dogs learn that being handled by their collar or harness is not a threat but a routine part of their interaction with humans.

Sit and stay, as well as come-to-touch forms the foundation to enable the ability to easily practice collar/harness grab. The complementary nature of these three exercises is the reason why we believe they remain the minimum skills all dogs should learn whether they attend a facility or not.

Loose-leash walking

Loose-leash walking is an essential skill that fosters a more enjoyable and controlled walking experience for both dogs and their human companions. This practice teaches dogs to walk calmly beside their handler without pulling on the leash, creating a more relaxed and pleasant outing.

At Fetch Dubai, we emphasize the importance of loose-leash walking as part of our comprehensive approach to dog care. Dogs that have mastered this skill are not only easier to manage but also more likely to enjoy their walks, as they can explore their environment without the discomfort of a taut leash. This practice also reduces the risk of injury to both dogs and their handlers, making walks safer and more enjoyable.

Our approach to loose-leash walking is rooted in cooperative and fear-free principles. We focus on positive reinforcement, rewarding dogs for maintaining a loose leash and staying close to their handler. By turning walks into a rewarding experience, we help dogs develop the self-control and focus needed to maintain this behavior even in distracting environments.

Loose-leash walking becomes particularly vital for us when transitioning dogs to different areas within our facility as we do use slip leashes for quick, controlled movements and safety. While slip leashes can be useful for brief management of movement and ensuring safety, they should not be used as training tools. Despite their name, slip/training leashes are designed for control rather than teaching; effective training relies on consistent, positive reinforcement methods.

Mastering loose-leash walking not only enhances communication between dogs and their human companions but also makes outings more harmonious and stress-free. Whether walking through busy urban areas or enjoying a leisurely stroll in the park, this skill enriches the overall dog-human relationship and ensures a safer, more enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Gate manners

Gate manners are an essential aspect of a well-mannered dog, focusing on teaching dogs to wait calmly and patiently at gates, doors, or entryways. This skill is crucial for ensuring safety and managing transitions smoothly, whether you're entering or exiting a home, vehicle, or any other area.

At Fetch Dubai, we emphasize gate manners as a key part of our program. Teaching dogs to wait for permission before moving through gates or doors not only prevents bolting or running off but also promotes a sense of control and calm in various situations. This skill helps maintain order and ensures that dogs are well-behaved in potentially chaotic or high-stress scenarios.

It’s important to note that mastering gate manners usually requires considerable practice and patience. This skill involves consistent practice, where dogs learn to associate waiting calmly with positive outcomes, such as being invited through the gate. This is where our practices of Sit and Stay, and Come-to-Touch add incredible value. Through repeated practice and positive reinforcement, dogs gradually develop the self-control and understanding needed to exhibit good gate manners reliably.

By integrating gate manners into our daily routine, we help dogs develop better impulse control and enhance their overall behaviour. This practice contributes to a more orderly and stress-free environment, making transitions smoother and reinforcing the bond between dogs and their human companions. Whether at home, during travel, or in public spaces, strong gate manners are a valuable component of a well-rounded and responsive dog.

It’s important to emphasize that our approach is dog-centered, meaning we tailor our practices to each dog’s individual needs and pace. We don’t set rigid expectations for how quickly a dog should progress or learn. Instead, we follow the dog’s lead, allowing them to advance on their own timeline.
